SERIES TWO - ROUND 4 at Mount Torrens has been cancelled due to a lack of nominations.
WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE!
Despite several pessimistic enquiries about the forecast weather – riders were greeted by sunny skies for the first round of the 2018 CycloSportif. Although the rain never eventuated – the wind was going to add an extra element to the round. Riders would start out with a short tailwind section – giving them a false sense of optimism, before turning back on themselves with a 6 km slog into an almost direct headwind. Following this toiling secteur they once again turn back and head to the finish with a blustery cross-tail.
The round received a strong turnout of over 110 riders – with a mixture of fresh faces and seasoned Sportif veterans, with all in high spirits. Whether that was due to the South Coast Cycling Club barbeque which awaited the riders post stage or just the chance to take in some of the most spectacular coastline in all of the world – it didn’t matter, as fun is the name of the game with Sportifs.
Although not a race – there were still some serious bragging rights on offer. The team’s got to choose from 2,3 or 4 laps of the 12k course, with awards for the fastest men’s, women’s and mixed teams. The fastest lap of the day went to the Power-On team – covering the course in 19.09 – just 3 seconds ahead of the Gorillas team! Although only pride available – the Gorillas showed their consistency in pacing to take out the fastest time for the four laps by over a minute.
The Women’s only teams had a new contender – in Fast Lane Coaching. With some of the youngest riders on the start list and one of the smaller teams, they rode consistent times in the difficult conditions to take the fastest women’s lap time. The team from MegaBike came home the fastest of the three laps teams. The Skinny Lattes came out in force for the round – entering a huge contingent of teams, and in so coming first and second in the two-lap team’s competition.
Post-stage teams indulged in the South Coast Barbeque – made famous by its weekly appearances at Edwardstown Velodrome over Sumer.
Riders all went into the draw for prizes provided by PEDALIT and Science in Sport, with over a quarter of the field taking home something for their efforts.
Missed out on Round One? Well, there are three more rounds of the 2018 Sportif Series One. The next round is on in just over a month – so there is plenty of time to get your crew together. Hosted by the Cycling Shrikes on the scenic Macclesfield Course you won’t want to miss out!
Cycling South Australia would like to thank the Onkaparinga Council for their support in facilitating the round.
We would also like to thank South Coast Cycling Club and the ACRM corner marshalls- without their donated time this event would not be possible!
The 2018 Cyclo Sportif Series kicks off at 9.00am this Sunday at picturesque Snapper Point, Aldinga Beach, with a strong entry field of over 100 riders set to take part.
Distances on offer range from 22km to 48km, providing opportunities for both new and experienced riders to test themselves on the course.
Acting Cycling SA CEO, Lachlan Ambrose comments “it is fantastic to see the Series has attracted such strong support from local riding groups, cycling clubs, and local SA businesses”.
“In previous years, Cyclo Sportif events have pulled more than 200 riders. Acknowledging the support we have received so far, it is a possibility we will see these numbers on the start line in the three upcoming rounds”.
The Series is heavily focused on increasing participation in cycling in a fun yet challenging and safe environment. Prizes will be awarded to individuals and teams, while riders enjoy a free and well-earned post ride sausage. Thank you to Pedalit, who have supplied prizes this ride.
If you didn’t get your team entered in time for this Sunday’s ride, don’t worry! This is just the first round in the 4-Round Series. We are already taking registrations for Round 2, hosted by Cycling Shrikes in Macclesfield on Sunday, 29 April – we hope to see you there!
Cycling SA would like to send a special thanks to South Coast Cycling Club for hosting the first ride of the Series, to the Onkaparinga Council for their help in facilitating the event and to the volunteers and marshals, we could not run the great events that we do without you.

One of the most eagerly anticipated announcements of the year – the dates of the 2018 CycloSportif Series. In a change to tradition, CSA will be running two four-round mini-series. Series One will kick off in just under a month. Snapper Point is the first and flatist round of the series – making for a gentle start to proceedings. After this, the series heads further inland – taking in the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley and Mclaren Vale region.
Haven’t done a Sportif before?
The concept is very simple. It’s a timed event with teams – a maximum of ten (10) riders and a minimum of three (3) – challenging the clock over a set distance. It isn’t a race – but a challenge. Teams work to get to the finish together. The object is to set the quickest time (or to just complete the course) without leaving anyone behind!
Cyclo Sportif offers a friendly and welcoming way for new riders to get involved in cycling and allows existing members an opportunity to track their progress. It will be a great opportunity to bond with your riding mates as there will be a lunch provided post the event where you will be able to reflect on the day’s ride.
What do we mean by team? Just anyone who wants to ride together! You don’t need matching jerseys or socks, you don’t need to be part of a club! Just get your riding buddies together and see how you compare!
